Daily OpenStreetMap maps of Ireland for Garmin
These are my own tests of making maps of Ireland for Garmin devices using OpenStreetMap data. Where "talkytoasteruk"
provides stable and tested maps of Ireland and the UK,
I'm interested in testing very recent versions of mkgmap for
features like routing (with turn restrictions), etc. For now I imagine them to be of interest mostly to other OSM
contributors in Ireland.
These files have been tried out on a Garmin Etrex Vista HCx.
Each of these .img files can be unzipped, renamed GMAPSUPP.IMG and placed in
the Garmin folder on the device. There are better instructions on talkytoaster's page :)
Disclaimer: These maps are experimental and there may be errors. Use your common sense and don't follow
directions that may be dangerous, illegal or undesirable. If you receive any incorrect instructions please report them.
Download
These maps were generated on 2012-01-27 with mkgmap .
- English language
- gmapsupp-en.img.gz (23.9896MB), gmapsupp-en.zip (23.9897MB), Config file, mkgmap style files, TYP file.
- Irish language
- gmapsupp-ga.img.gz (24.03MB), gmapsupp-ga.zip (24.0302MB). Uses the lang:ga tag first, falling back to English if necessary. Config file, mkgmap style files, TYP file.
- Noname map
- gmapsupp-noname.img.gz (9.39686MB), gmapsupp-noname.zip (9.39699MB). Strongly highlights roads with no name, lightly highlights roads with English but no Irish name, leaving dual-named roads lightly marked. Config file, mkgmap style files, TYP file.
- Combined
- gmapsupp-combined.img.gz (57.3146MB), gmapsupp-combined.zip (57.3147MB). All three of the above combined into one. In the map configuration page of your GPS you should be able to switch them on and off (they appear superimposed otherwise).
Recent changes
- 20110830
- Finally back after a long hiatus
- 20110201
- House numbers and addr:interpolation ways now included
- 20100727
- Each layer now has a different family-id to work better on newer Garmin devices.
- 20100602
- Toll roads (tagged toll=yes) have "(Toll)" appended to their name. Barrier=gate defaults to access=no (previously ignored entirely). Also, barrier=toll_booth shows up (but I need to tweak the TYP to suppress the text "Exit" that Garmin assumes).
- 20100515
- Changed generation time to 07:45 (should finish by approx 08:00) since Geofabrick's extract isn't always ready any earlier
- 20100315
- Published styles.
- 20100303
- Automated and now runs daily. Should be updated by 0700 every day.
- 20100219
- Made config and TYP files available.
- 20100208
- Using a custom TYP file for more OSM-like colours. Still not quite happy, yet.
Known issues
- The name index doesn't work right. Among other things it thinks lots of places are in the UK, and searching the index is unreliable.
Resources
All mapping data is from the OpenStreetMap project. The extract of Ireland
is taken from the Geofabrik download area. Mkgmap
is the program used to generate the Garmin maps.
